Bowditch Makes Strong Start
| Trevor Immelman holds a one-shot lead at the Greenbrier Classic after a six-under-par first round of 64, but Australian Stephen Bowditch is right on his tail just one stroke behind.
Bowditch is in a group of five players at five under after a strong opening round of 65 which included six birdies and just the one blemish on the par three eighth.
Americans Billy Mayfair, Derek Lamely, Webb Simpson and Gary Woodland are the other players at minus five with Bowditch.
Andre Stolz and Aron Price are the next best of the Aussies at one-under following first round 69s, with Matt Jones, John Senden, Greg Chalmers and Nick O'Hern all one shot further back.
Four players hold a share of seventh at four under, with Canadian David Hearn, Zimbabwean Brendon de Jonge and Americans Kyle Stanley and Chris DiMarco all opening with rounds of 66.
While Immleman may not have matched Appleby's historic feat, he did impress on day one, holing seven birdies and just one bogey throughout to set the early pace.
